artist bio: jeanine oxenius
I am not a reclusive artist and thrive in a group environment. I take great joy in passing on what I know and am delighted to be part of group or community projects. The largest group I ever coordinated was 49 Artists from all over New Zealand. I communicated with them via an Internet Artist Site and used ordinary surface mail to send out materials/instructions to each individual and received the finished pieces back by mail. The finished masterpiece was then presented at a New Zealand Art Auction Side to be auctioned off. |
Originally from Germany, Jeanine arrived in New Zealand in 1984 and settled in Auckland.
Having had a career in Jewellery Design and Dental Technology for more than two decades, Jeanine started to paint in 2005 as a form of stress release. After a successful first exhibition in Whangarei in September 2005 Jeanine produced another body of work within a year, which she then celebrated with her Auckland Debut Show in 2006. In 2007 Jeanine had her first overseas exhibition and consequently became part of a stable of artists belonging to a German Gallery which runs annual exhibitions throughout Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Jeanine's work can be found in private and permanent collections nationally and internationally. |
In 2008 Jeanine left Auckland for a more secluded lifestyle and settled in Whangarei Heads, a small community with unbelievably beautiful landscapes, 30 km away from a major township.
Here she started a 3 year degree course in Applied Art, which she finished with excellence at the end of 2012. Her return to Auckland in 2013 marked the start of a new body of work. Jeanine is not a reclusive artist. She participates in as many group shows as she possibly can and has been the instigator and curator of many successful group shows in New Zealand. Jeanine is always very supportive of her fellow artists and is an inspiration to many. Studying full time for the three years has not deterred Jeanine from creating dozens of paintings for her gallery in Europe every year, as she had done since 2007. As well, she has had at least one solo or group show each year in New Zealand. |
Jeanine's figurative painting style evokes anticipation, humour, hope and it often depicts a narrative, which speaks of foreign lands and uncharted spaces.
"People are funny creatures. They are forever on the lookout for something better. I am not immune to this, but living in paradise and on the edge of the world it makes it a bit difficult to look over the fence to see if the grass is greener on the other side. So instead of looking over the fence I made it my business to look beyond." Jeanine is trying to take the viewer on a journey, to a place - her place. Somewhere, where no one has been before but one that still feels welcome and strangely familiar. A place where you could imagine spending some time. Being in the moment, at exactly this moment.
